Review by Brie: AIR AWAKENS by Elise Kova
Title: Air Awakens
Author: Elise Kova
Series: Book One in the Air Awakens Series
Publication Date: August 27th, 2015
A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
Air Awakens by Elise Kova has quickly become one of my favorite reads this year. Full disclosure? I honestly picked this book up because I had seen it around bookstagram and loved the cover! I know, I know, you can't judge a book by its cover. But sometimes, actually more often that not, I find this tactic works out for me.
Everything about this book was magical and not just because its about magic! Vhalla is thrown into a world that she's been taught to fear and hate. A world that is "wrong" in the eyes of her people. She leans that she possesses magic herself. In denial she tries to hide this from herself. Watching as Vhalla comes to terms with her new reality, while growing closer to the most powerful sorcerer, Price Aldrik was quite a journey. The ending left me begging for more, so I immediately had to run out and grab the rest of this series!
I started reading Air Awakens on Monday and finished Friday afternoon of a VERY busy week. I couldn't stop. I loved the characters and the world that Elise Kova created and I absolutely cannot wait to continue reading this series. I'm excited to see what's next for these characters.

Speaking of this stunning cover art, lets have a little look at the artist, cover conception and full art jacket. Shall we?
Merilliza Chan has created the cover art for all 5 of the books in the Air Awakens. Her art is breathtaking. I did a bit of digging and found a fun post about the edit process on the Air Awakens boxes set cover. I'll share the pictures here and link you to all the sites where I found it.
But before that here's a little bio I found on her webstie: Meril is a Filipino-Chinese illustrator based in Manila, Philippines. Her works primarily focus on the fantasy genre, including card games, concept art and book covers.
She has a background in both design and marketing thanks to her BFA in Advertising Arts. In 2014, she graduated from the University of Santo Tomas and ventured towards freelancing in 2015. Her goal is to create many artworks for the field of publishing and the game industry.

Elise Kova has always had a profound love of fantastical worlds. Somehow, she managed to focus on the real world long enough to graduate with a Master’s in Business Administration before crawling back under her favorite writing blanket to conceptualize her next magic system. She currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and when she is not writing can be found playing video games, watching anime, or talking with readers on social media. She is the USA Today bestselling author of the Air Awakens Series as well as the upcoming Loom Saga (Keymaster, 2017).
