Fate Series Read-A-Long: BREAKING BRANDON by Elizabeth Reyes
What happened in chapters 1 - chapter 6?:
Breaking Brandon begins in the past. He’s home on leave from the Marines because his dad is dying. He had a thing with a girl named Sofie and her brothers warned him to stay away from her, accused him of taking advantage of her, but he loves her and can’t do that. He tries to talk to her, but he’s wasted and her brothers beat him up. He runs into her in the pharmacy a few days later, and tells her that he loves her, and then leaves. He’s done with it all.
After his dad dies, he packs up their house with his mom to move across the country to where he’s stationed in Georgia, but there’s an accident on the road and he loses his mom, too. Brandon shuts down emotionally afterwards - he doesn’t take any leave time and enters DI school straight away.
When we’re introduced to Regina in the past, we see she’s not having an easy time of anything either. She’s suicidal and alone, trying to kill herself, but is interrupted by a neighbor who saves her life.
In the present day, Regina and Brandon first meet in the airport. He’s disgusted by her snobby princess attitude and everything she reminds him of. They’re both moving to San Diego, and it’s not until a few days later that he sees her on base that he realizes she’ll be working there as well, as an engineer specialist.
Regina is trying to recover from something that happened in her past and had been seeing a therapist to help her with her baggage. Still, one night she’s triggered by a song, and she’s crying and a mess when she runs into Brandon, but he’s rude and disinterested in her.
Or at least he appears to be. When she confronts him about why he’s so rude to her, he feigns hate, but it’s just a defense for the unexplained attraction he feels toward her.
Favourite Quote:
He finally understood what his father had meant all those years. That kind of emotion - the kind he felt was suffocating his heart at that moment - was sacred. It was something that should remain deep inside. No one had a right to know you were feeling it but yourself. Showing it was a sign of weakness. That’s exactly how he felt at that moment, like the weakest most pathetic idiot on the planet. At that moment, he vowed he’d never let anyone - no matter what - witness this side of him again.
Discussion Questions:
- Have you ever been able to just come right out and tell someone you loved them like Brandon did with Sofie in the past?
- Why do you think Brandon is so detached from the people around him?
He ruled out attachments years ago. Then one day he crosses paths with a beautiful but pampered daddy's little princess. History has taught him one thing about women like her—steer clear.
She was starting over. She moved back to her home town, took a new job assignment, and left her past behind. For the first time in over eighteen months, she's even intrigued by a man—a sexy but cold and indifferent drill sergeant. Despite feeling drawn to him, she has no time to figure out his inexplicable aversion to her.
Then Fate steps in one night, forcing them together. There's a connection neither can refute, and they both consider giving into the undeniable attraction.
Fate however can also be cruel. Just when they surrender to their heart's desires, past demons resurface in the most unexpected way, threatening the happiness neither realized they so desperately needed.

When she's not writing (which is rare) she spends as much time as she can with her husband of almost twenty-one years, two young adult children, her Great Dane, Dexter and big fat lazy cat named Tyson.
Great questions! I think he's decided to stick to the no-attachments thing because he's been hurt and learned a hard lesson. I love Elizabeth's work so I'm excited to read about Brandon and Sofia :)
